A monitor is one of the few pieces of home office equipment you look at, without exception, every working hour of every working day. Choosing one well matters less about chasing the highest spec sheet and more about matching a small set of genuine trade-offs to how you actually work.

Quick answer: The right monitor depends on your workspace, your budget, how you actually work, your viewing distance, and the type of work you do — not on which specification sounds most impressive. This guide explains each factor so you can weigh them for your own situation.

Why your monitor matters

You spend more continuous hours looking at your monitor than at almost anything else in your workspace, which makes small, poorly matched compromises compound over a working day rather than staying minor. A monitor positioned or specified wrongly does not usually cause a single obvious problem — it shows up gradually, as eye fatigue by mid-afternoon, or a habit of leaning toward the screen that eventually becomes neck strain. Getting the fundamentals right once removes a source of daily friction you might otherwise never trace back to the screen itself.

Choosing the right monitor size

Size is not simply a preference — it is a function of how far the screen sits from your eyes and how much desk depth you have to work with. A monitor that is genuinely too large for your viewing distance forces your eyes to scan rather than rest on content, which defeats the purpose of buying a bigger screen in the first place.

24 inches suits a desk depth of around 24 inches or less, or a viewing distance under about 20 inches. It is often overlooked in buying guides that favour larger screens, but for a genuinely shallow desk it remains the size that avoids the scanning problem entirely.

27 inches is the most common size for a single monitor at a standard desk depth, and the point at which higher resolutions like QHD start to show a visible sharpness benefit over Full HD at normal viewing distance.

32 inches suits users who want more usable screen space for side-by-side windows without moving to a second monitor, provided your desk and viewing distance can accommodate it — 32 inches at a 24-inch desk depth is usually too close for comfortable viewing.

Ultrawide (34 inches and up, 21:9 aspect ratio) replaces a dual-monitor setup with a single screen and no bezel gap down the middle, at the cost of a stand that takes up real desk space and, on curved models, a viewing experience some people find disorienting off-centre.

Understanding resolution

Full HD (1920×1080) is genuinely sufficient at 24 inches for email, browsing and general office work — the pixel density at that size and typical viewing distance does not leave much visible room for improvement from a higher resolution.

QHD (2560×1440) is the point where the difference becomes noticeable at 27 inches, particularly for anyone reading dense text or working across multiple windows — roughly 1.8 times the pixel count of Full HD in the same space.

4K (3840×2160) earns its keep at 27 inches and above, especially for detailed work like design, photo editing, or spreadsheets with dense data — but at smaller sizes or greater viewing distances, the extra sharpness becomes difficult to perceive, meaning you can end up paying for resolution your eyes cannot actually resolve.

The size and resolution decisions are not independent — make them together, matched to your actual viewing distance, rather than choosing the highest resolution available and assuming it always helps.

Panel technologies

IPS offers the widest viewing angles and the most accurate, consistent colour, which is why it is the default recommendation for office and colour-sensitive work. Its main weakness is contrast — blacks tend to look more grey than true black compared to other panel types.

VA delivers noticeably deeper contrast and blacks than standard IPS, which suits dimly lit rooms and media viewing well, but viewing angles are narrower — colour and brightness can shift if you are not looking at the screen roughly head-on.

OLED offers the best contrast of the three, with true blacks and no backlight bleed, but carries a genuine long-term risk of burn-in with static on-screen elements — a real consideration for office use, where a taskbar or the same application window often sits in the same place for hours at a time, every day.

None of these is universally correct. IPS suits most general office work, VA suits contrast-sensitive and dimmer environments, and OLED suits users who understand and accept the burn-in trade-off in exchange for the best image quality available.

Refresh rate

60Hz is the long-standing office default and remains genuinely fine for email, documents, spreadsheets and browsing — none of these tasks involve the kind of fast on-screen motion where higher refresh rates become visible.

75Hz and 100Hz produce a real, noticeable smoothness improvement specifically when scrolling through long documents or web pages — this is the one genuinely useful office-relevant benefit of a higher refresh rate, distinct from gaming performance.

120Hz and above mainly benefits fast motion — gaming, video editing timelines, fast-scrolling content — rather than static office work. For most office tasks, the jump from 100Hz to 120Hz or higher is difficult to perceive, even though it is often marketed as a meaningful upgrade. If your budget is limited, this is one of the easiest specifications to deprioritise without a real loss in everyday office use.

Colour accuracy

sRGB is the standard colour space for general web and office content, and most monitors cover close to 100 percent of it — this is enough for the overwhelming majority of office work without needing to think about colour spaces at all.

Adobe RGB and DCI-P3 are wider colour spaces used in print design and video or film work respectively. If you do not work professionally in one of these fields, a monitor’s coverage of either space is not something you need to evaluate or pay extra for.

Who actually needs this: graphic designers, photographers, and video editors doing colour-critical work, where an inaccurate monitor could mean a print or export looks wrong once it leaves your screen. Who does not: almost everyone else — writers, developers, analysts, and general office workers can safely ignore colour gamut specifications entirely and put that part of the budget elsewhere.

Eye comfort

A specific correction worth making plainly: blue-light filtering is heavily marketed as an eye-strain solution, but the evidence does not support it. A Cochrane systematic review and multiple independent studies have found no meaningful difference in eye strain symptoms between blue-light-filtering lenses or screen modes and standard ones. If a monitor markets a blue-light mode, it is not a reason to choose it — and its absence is not a reason to avoid one.

The factors genuinely linked to digital eye strain are more mundane: reduced blinking during screen use, prolonged near-focus without breaks, and glare from poorly matched brightness or ambient lighting. Set your monitor’s brightness to roughly match the light level of the room around it — a bright screen in a dark room, or a dim screen in a bright one, both force your eyes to constantly readjust. Reduce glare by positioning the screen away from direct light sources rather than relying on a matte coating alone to fix it.

The single most evidence-backed habit is the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something roughly 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds. This costs nothing and does more for eye strain than any panel specification.

Ergonomics

Tilt the screen back slightly — a few degrees is usually enough — rather than keeping it perfectly vertical, which reduces glare from overhead lighting. If your monitor supports height adjustment natively, use it before resorting to books or a stand; if it does not, a basic stand or a VESA-compatible monitor arm solves the same problem and adds the ability to fine-tune position rather than fixing it at one height permanently.

Single monitor vs dual monitors vs ultrawide

A single monitor is the simplest setup and genuinely sufficient for focused, sequential work — writing, reading, single-application tasks — where multiple windows would just be a distraction rather than a benefit.

Dual monitors suit work that genuinely requires two separate, independent screens — referencing one application while working in another, or a video call on one screen while taking notes on the other. The trade-off is a visible bezel gap between screens and two separate stands taking up desk space.

An ultrawide replaces the dual-monitor setup with one continuous screen, removing the bezel gap and the second stand, and suits window-snapping workflows well. It is a worse fit if you specifically need to angle two screens differently — toward two different people, for example — since an ultrawide is one fixed physical unit rather than two independently positionable ones.

Common buying mistakes

  • Buying too large for the desk. A screen you cannot view comfortably at your actual desk depth is not an upgrade, regardless of size or resolution.
  • Buying 4K unnecessarily. At smaller sizes or typical viewing distances, the extra resolution can be difficult to perceive — confirm the benefit applies to your specific size and distance before paying for it.
  • Ignoring ergonomics entirely. A superb panel at the wrong height creates the same neck and eye strain a mediocre panel would.
  • Ignoring connectivity. A monitor without the right ports — USB-C with power delivery, for instance — can mean extra cables and adapters that a slightly different model would have avoided.
  • Choosing solely by refresh rate. Beyond roughly 100Hz, most office tasks show little visible benefit — don’t let this one spec crowd out size, resolution and ergonomics in the decision.

Maintenance

Clean the screen with a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth — avoid ammonia-based glass cleaners, which can damage anti-glare coatings over time. Reduce brightness rather than leaving it at maximum, both for eye comfort and to slow long-term panel degradation, particularly on OLED. A well-maintained monitor typically lasts several years of daily use; check the manufacturer’s stated warranty length before buying, since it is a reasonable proxy for how long the manufacturer itself expects the panel to perform reliably.
